Vasquez and Booth arrive

The Astros have called up OF Danry Vasquez and C Brett Booth from High-A Lancaster. The pair joined the club Tuesday and are active for tonight’s game. Vasquez, 21, was acquired by Houston via a trade, along with a player to be named later (RHP David Paulino) from Detroit in exchange for RHP Jose Veras on July 29, 2013. Vasquez, the reigning California League Player of the Week, was hitting .315 with 21 runs, 13 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, 21 RBIs and 6 steals in 40 games for the JetHawks. He has hit safely in 11 consecutive games, batting .435 (20-for-46) with 9 runs, 5 doubles, 2 home runs and 11 RBIs during the streak.

Vasquez hit .291 with 30 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs and 47 RBIs for the JetHawks last season. He belted 3 home runs and notched 5 RBIs on June 16 vs. Visalia. Both feats set new career standards. Vasquez had hit 1 home run in his prior 296 at-bats. He batted .328 and reached base at a .383 clip over the final 16 games of the regular season, and plated 5 runs during 8 playoff games as Lancaster captured the California League title.

Booth, who began the year with Corpus Christi was hitting .167 with 1 home run and 3 RBIs in 7 games for the JetHawks. The former University of Alabama backstop went 1-for-4 on April 12 at Tulsa, his lone appearance with the Hooks. Booth, 24, batted .242 with 5 home runs and 24 RBIs in 56 games for Quad Cities last season.

To make room on Corpus Christi’s roster, the Astros shipped C Trent Woodward to extended spring training and OF Jon Kemmer was placed on the inactive list.
